Common Knee Injuries

One of the most common orthopedic injuries is to the knee.

The knee joint is the largest joint in the body, and one of the most complex. The knee is made up of ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and bone. The most common knee injuries are menisical tears and ligament ruptures. There is a vast variety of conservative treatment options for knee injuries, and as a last resort minimally invasive arthroscopic surgical procedures can be performed to alleviate pain and repair the damage.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis.

It occurs when the cartilage between your joints begins to wear down over time causing inflammation and pain. This type of arthritis can cause pain in your knees, hips, ankles, elbows, wrists, etc. There are several ways we can treat osteoarthritis conservatively, and if need be our orthopedic surgeon can sit down with you and talk about joint replacement options.

Bone Fractures

A fracture is a partial or complete break in a bone that can be caused by overuse, an acute injury, or a pathological medical condition.

Fractures are typically diagnosed by x-ray and depending on the type of fracture may require surgical correction or casting and bracing. Both OrthoGo locations are equipped with in office x-ray machines to help the providers properly diagnose and treat your fracture accordingly.

Sprains and Strains

Sprains and strains share similar symptoms and causes, but they are different soft tissue injuries.

A sprain is caused by the overstretching or tearing of a ligament. A strain is caused by the overstretching or tearing of a tendon or muscle. Both sprains and strains commonly effect the ankle, knee, wrist, and back. Treatment of sprain and strains typically involve lots of rest, and depending on the severity may require immobilization by bracing, and even surgery if the ligament or tendon is torn too severely. Our providers will be able to help guide you through this process to get you back on your feet.

Overuse Syndromes

An overuse injury is any type of muscle of joint injury cause by repetitive motions and movements.

Typical conditions are stress fractures, tennis elbow, runner’s knee, shin splints, Achilles tendinitis, shoulder tendinitis, etc. Our team of providers will work directly with you on treatment for these conditions, so you can get back to doing the things you love the most.

Carpal Tunnel

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition that causes numbness, tingling, and pain in the hand and arm.

It is a common condition that happens when the median nerve in the hand becomes compressed. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can be diagnosed with a physical examination as well as electrodiagnostic studies. Typically, when diagnosed early, it can be treated with conservative treatment such as bracing, NSAIDS, activity changes, and cortisone injections. When all conservative treatment options have failed, a carpal tunnel release is recommended to relieve the pressure on the nerve.

Rotator Cuff Repairs

Rotator cuff tears can happen to anyone doing the most mundane of activities, from cleaning windows to an overuse injury from sports or work.

There are two different types of rotator cuff tears, partial and complete. Symptoms can vary from person to person depending on the severity of the tear. A person may have difficulty raising their arms above their head, hear clicking or popping, or have weakness in your shoulder. A doctor can diagnosis a rotator cuff tear with a physical examination, as well as advanced imaging such as an MRI. Conservative measures are typically taken initially to see if it will improve your pain level and prolong a surgical procedure. Conservative treatment for rotator cuff tears usually begins with physical therapy to strengthen the muscles in your shoulder, as well as NSAIDS, and cortisone injections. When this fails, the doctor may recommend surgical intervention. This type of surgery is performed arthroscopically and, in an outpatient setting.
